  • Research summary

Being unable to pass urine is very common immediately following a stroke but we do not know why or what happens to a person’s bladder in these first hours. Commonly a tube (catheter) is inserted to allow the bladder to drain however these cause infections and are uncomfortable so are best avoided if possible. This study uses a handheld scanner together with routine information to follow bladder filling and whether people feel it filling, during the first few days after stroke. This will help our understanding of what happens to the bladder in the immediate period following stroke and patterns of recovery, which will allow us to recommend different treatment in the future.
