Research summary
Dissociative identity disorder (DID), is a rare and often disputed diagnosis. Very little is known about what constitutes positive practice in working with dissociative identity states. Clinical guidelines for successful therapeutic work are missing. The proposed study will conduct a series of 6 explorative interviews: with a patient with DID, his dissociated alter, as well as ward staff who have been working with the patient’s dissociated identities (4 - head of care, key nurse, occupational therapist and support worker). A phenomenological analysis will then be conducted which will draw out compelling themes and important factors, in order to explore what both the patient and staff believe was helpful in the multidisciplinary treatment, delivered over the course of a year in an inpatient psychiatric rehabilitation service. It is hoped that this will act as an empowering piece of work for the patient, who co-designed the study with the research team. It is also hoped that it will be a rewarding reflection for the team which has worked collaboratively to overcome challenges and deliver high quality care for this young man.
