  • Research summary

The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the experience of repeat psychiatric admissions in people diagnosed with psychosis. Evidence suggests that people with psychosis are more likely to be readmitted to hospital and less likely to be satisfied with the inpatient care they receive. However, the experience of repeat admissions for this client group has not been explored from a service user perspective. This research hopes to improve our understanding of how repeat admissions are experienced so that patient experience can be improved and the likelihood of readmission to hospital can be reduced for this client group. This is crucial in light of the well-documented negative psychological effects and high cost of psychiatric admissions.

The research will recruit between 8 and 12 people diagnosed with psychosis who have had two or more psychiatric admissions within the last 5 years from local community mental health teams (CMHTs). Participants who agree to take part in the study will be interviewed about their experience of repeat admissions either at their home or local CMHT. The interview will be recorded and transcribed by the researcher into text form. This will then be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), a qualitative research methodology which explores experiences in context and encourages the interviewer to reflect on the impact of their own values and assumptions on the interpretation process. The researcher will identify themes within the data and these will be presented in table format. Alongside the table, quotes from the interviews will be used to illustrate the different themes and these will be discussed.

Participants will be recruited between December 2014 and March 2015. The research will be written up and submitted towards a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford in July 2015 .
