Research summary
Obesity has become one of the biggest health concerns in the UK. Traditional approaches to obesity treatment have been limited by a “one size fits all” approach and there has been no systematic attempt to determine whether person-centredness might be an important ingredient of successful weight loss programs. Person-centred care is a term used increasingly to denote personalised treatment that is tailored to the needs of the individual. However, there is little known about how this concept can be applied to weight management. Therefore the overall goal of the research is to define person-centredness and its potential value in treatment, in the context of weight management, and to extract principles that could be generalized.
This research will use a qualitative design across two studies.1)The first study will explore the current practice of person centred care in a local community weight management centre in Plymouth through fieldwork observation and a review of local and national literature.
2)The second study will use narrative interviews to explore newly referred patient’s stories and understandings of their journey to referral, their attitudes to and perceptions of their weight and their health. This study will describe the social, cultural and clinical frameworks for individuals and describe opportunities to facilitate access, retention and improve outcomes from weight management programmes.
