Research summary
The proposed research aims to explore the personal experiences, expectations, and the patients perceptions of need, in relation to the transition from an NHS inpatient mental health setting to community services. I aim to explore the patients experiences to gain specific insights and their individual reality, and whether the patients voice is being heard and their needs met during this particularly vulnerable process. A healthy transition from inpatient mental health settings to community services is vital to an individuals social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. Poorly managed transitions can be costly for the individual, causing negative effects to be experienced by the patient and their families; in addition to the financial implications to the NHS and other organisations.
The participants will consist of a self-selected sample/volunteer sample of approximately 16 patients between the ages of 18-65 years, and with a variety of diagnoses. The participants will be recruited from two treatment wards from St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital within Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust, either detained under the Mental Health Act or residing on the ward on a voluntary basis for a period of more than one month. All potential participants would be deemed to have capacity, determined by the ward staff, and with a view to being discharged within 4-6 weeks.
The study will involve the participants taking part in one semi-structured interview consisting of 10 questions, and lasting approximately 30/45 minutes, and will be audio recorded. The interviews will take place on the wards, with or without a staff member present.REC name
