  • Research summary

\nFrailty can be understood as a state of increased vulnerability to stressors. It is associated with poor outcomes including hospital readmissions and mortality. With an ageing population the utilisation and awareness of the concept is becoming more current, and support for older people living with frailty has been identified as a national priority. \nThere is currently poor consensus on the measurement of frailty and many assessment tools exist. Exploring the experience of those carrying out frailty assessment processes and the experience of those assessed as being frail is therefore useful in order to influence current and future practice.\n\nThe study will be carried out be two Masters students under the guidance of the chief investigator. The study will therefore have two arms:\n\n-One arm will explore the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) experience of frailty assessment processes carried out in the community hospital environment.\n-The other arm will explore patient (and optionally their family/ caregivers) experience of being assessed for and identified as ’frail’ within the community hospital environment.\n\nThe study will last approximately 18 months. Up to ten ANP and up to ten patients (with or without their family /caregivers) will be interviewed. Interviews will take place in the Community Hospital and last no longer than one hour.\n\nOpen questions will explore the participants experience of frailty assessments. Thematic analysis of interviews will identify codes and categorise leading to themes that describe and define the phenomena.\n\n\n
