  • Research summary

This research project is a qualitative study exploring the priorities and goals in younger patients when undergoing and recovering from a Total Hip Replacement (THR). To be confident that healthcare professionals are providing the very best patient care in the instance of the younger patient it is essential to ask them their own interpretation of needs and priorities, and how they feel we can meet them. There currently is an urgent need for further studies into the area of THR in young patients, especially qualitative research defining the outcomes important to them after surgery. The considerable larger older patient population undergoing these surgeries often influence the way post-operative outcomes are measured. This study seeks to explore between 6-7 patient participants’own expectations and hopes leading up to undergoing a THR, then to examine their own views on their recovery and rehabilitation post-operatively. Using a qualitative approach, the study will use open questions and a semi structured interview technique to investigate the patients’ individual expected outcomes and priorities in their recovery.
All patients, 18-50 years old inclusive who are scheduled to undergo a primary THR in the following 12 months will be eligible to participate. Interviews will take place with participants at 3 points of their treatment either face-to-face or via telephone/ video call (dependent on patient's preference). The first interview scheduled at a point before the operation, the second taking place 6 weeks after the procedure and the final interview planned for 6 months post-operation.
The study is being funded by Milton Keynes University Hospital and research activities will take place solely at the hospital site. The Study is expected to last 18 months. With a 12 month recruitment period, participants will be involved in the study for the period of time from consent until 6 months from their THR.
