  • Research summary

Surgery can cause major stress on the body and therefore to prepare patients for surgery, a
prehab service is offered in some places in the UK. This involves taking part in physical activity (to ensure patients are fit for surgery), offering emotional support and access to other services e.g. dietary guidance, emotional support. The aim is to ensure patients are prepared for surgery which may mean better outcomes and less time spent in hospital recovering.

The idea of prehab is very new and there are not many services available and we don't know what works well and for whom. The aim of this qualitative study is to understand the experiences of patients offered and those that attend the Fit4Life surgery prehab interventions in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The objectives are to answer the following questions:
    1. To understand what works well and if there is need for service improvements
    2. To understand how the interventions (i.e. what components) help people change their behaviour
    3. To better understand why patients, take part and what benefits they experience
    4. To understand why people offered the programme decide not to attend the service

We will conduct interviews with those who have taken part and try and ask those who haven't taken part the reasons why. This will allow us to improve the service offered to patients.
