  • Research summary

This research aims to improve rehabilitative services for young people/adults (aged 18-21 years) in custody by addressing the clinical and attitudinal needs of these young adults. Many of these young adults present with symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder [ADHD}, such as inattention, impulsivity, poor emotional and behavioural control. Their progress is hampered by their cognitive impairments, together with emotional and behavioural dysregulation. Whilst cognitive skills programmes are available, these are general in their approach and do not include specific strategies to address these symptoms. \n\nThis study will assess the acceptability of a programme (R&R2ADHD) that has been specifically developed for young adults with these types of problems in this setting. The programme aims to improve their cognitive, problem-solving, interpersonal, self-control and critical reasoning skills and help reduce violent attitudes and behaviour. Furthermore, the study aims to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the efficacy of R&R2ADHD in order to establish data to obtain an effect size to inform a future randomised controlled trial in a young offender institution. \n\nThere is one site involved in this study - HYMOI Feltham, with participants being involved in a group programme, with the opportunity to provide feedback on their participation through semi-structured interviews. Six groups of eight participants will be delivered consecutively over a period of 17 months.
