Research summary
With the expected increase in demand for radiotherapy services due to a shortage of Clinical Oncologists and more people being diagnosed with cancer, there will be more Therapeutic Radiographers extending their roles and undertaking tasks such as non-medical prescribing. It is important to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and suitability of the Therapeutic Radiographer non-medical prescriber (NMP). This has not previously been researched and published. This study will take place in the two radiotherapy centres in Northern Ireland, where Therapeutic Radiographer NMP and medical prescribers who review patients during radiotherapy treatments will be invited to take part. They will complete a short audit tool after every consultation for one week for all patients they review during this period. Patients will also be invited to take part by completing a survey to find out about their experience of the review appointment and in interviews to explore this in more depth. NMP Therapeutic Radiographer team members will also be asked to take part in interviews to find out the views of colleagues to non-medical prescribers within oncology.
