Research summary
Communication and consultation skills are important to both patients and clinicians. Shared decision making is particularly important in the conversations around consent that surgeons and patients undertake together. Surgical trainees in the UK are not routinely taught shared decision making skills. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh will soon implement a programme to teach such skills for surgical trainees in Scotland. The educational techniques that will be used to deliver this training are novel. These include video assisted debrief of clinical encounters and debrief of debriefers (meta debrief). Using qualitative and quantitative methods I will explore the methods, learning and effects of this programme. Through dissemination of research findings this project will add to the clinical education literature and help to shape the future direction of travel of postgraduate clinical education in relation to consultation skills, communication skills and surgical education.
