  • Research summary

In 2006 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence(NICE) guidelines for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder(BDD)was published which provided some direction for recognition and treatment of BDD. The service for OCD and BDD based at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust provides treatment in accordance with the NICE, 2006 guidelines. This study plans to determine how effective this application of the NICE guidelines has been for BDD and what the experiences of patients and clinicians has been in this service. This will allow for evaluation of the standards of care that are being achieved by the service and to identify areas where improvements can be made. The local outpatients are included from 1st April 2006 and national inpatients and national outpatients from 1st April 2007. These are the dates that the respective services’ were started.
Patients are accepted from the age of 18 onwards, there is no upper age limit.
Patients will be included in the sample if they have completed an adequate trial of treatment, which is 15 sessions or 3 months inpatient stay. At this stage of treatment the patient would have completed sufficient therapy to continue to practice the techniques if they wish to be discharged from the service.
Clinical staff that are responsible for devising treatment programmes and providing treatment to patients will be interviewed. This sample will included psychotherapists, psychiatrists and occupational therapists.
