Research summary
Patients admitted to secure hospital settings of the NHS can often have difficulties in understanding and managing relationships with others. This is considered to be influenced by early experiences of relationships with significant others. In extreme cases these interpersonal difficulties can result in harm to others and themselves. the current study aims to evaluate a groupwork intervention called Understanding Relationships and Intimacy. The group is delivered in a high secure hospital in the UK, for forensic patients who may benefit from learning about what makes relationships work. The evaluation will investigate outcomes, assessed by self-report and observer rated questionnaires, for patients who complete the group. It will also compare these outcomes to those of participants who have been referred for the group, but are allocated to a waiting list.
