Research summary
This is an ethnographic study, which will be conducted in the gynaecology cancer Department at University College Hospital. The study is a small scale study, that will be looking at the communication practices between oncologists and patients within the context of treatment decisions made during the clinical encounter. The aim of the study is to understand (1) if and how oncologists engage patients in shared decision making, (2) if and how informed consent relating to treatment decisions is sought. The study will involve observing consultations between oncologists and patients. Following on from observing the clinical encounter between the oncologist and patient face-to-face interviews will be conducted with the oncologist.
Up to six consultations will be observed and up to three oncologists will be interviewed potentially twice each. Each interview will last 20 minutes. The study will last for three months. During the study patients will be observed and oncologists will be observed and interviewed.REC name
