  • Data collection arrangements

Endoscopy involves examining the lining of the wall of the digestive tract (also known as the gastrointestinal tract) with a flexible tube which has a small camera with a light attached at the end. This allows the endoscopist performing the procedure to see images from inside the gastrointestinal tract on a monitor screen. The main purpose is to detect abnormalities, within the lining of the gastrointestinal tract such as cancer.

The data stored within this research database will include anonymous (non-identifiable) images from within the digestive tract that are viewed during the endoscopy procedure alongside anonymous information relating to any abnormalities found for example, size and shape. The anonymous images and data will be managed and held by the research team at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional & Surgical Sciences and Computer Science Department at University College London.

  • Research programme

The purpose of the database is to improve the ability to detect and correctly identify abnormalities found in the digestive tract during endoscopy. The anonymous images and data will be used for training and research. We will develop tools to improve the detection of abnormalities and educate endoscopists so that they can improve the quality of endoscopy and their ability to recognise abnormalities.
