Research summary
This factorial cluster randomised research trial tests two interventions alone and combined against a no intervention control group and is aimed at reducing inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in Primary Care in England The first intervention is an answer phone message played to patients calling their GP surgery which tells patients that GPs in this practice are committed to prudent antibiotic prescribing. The second intervention is a GP commitment poster displayed in consulting rooms to demonstrate GP commitment to appropriate prescribing. The study will be conducted as a non-blinded cluster 4 armed randomised controlled trial; arm 1: answer phone message alone, arm 2: GP commitment poster alone, arm 3: both interventions 1 and 2 combined, and a control arm. The interventions will be delivered at practice level. A sample of 192 practices will be recruited via 2 CCGs (Kernow and Bedfordshire) and CSU North of England.
