Research summary
The proposed research is for using biological material and data obtained for the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort, also known as the 'Children of the 90's' study. Initially recruited into the study were pregnant women in 1991 and 1992. The children arising from the pregnancies and their family members have been followed up since that time and an extensive amount of biological material and data is available for the study.
This proposal is for the analysis of placenta samples that have been collected by ALSPAC. Specifically, those collected between 1991 and 1992 as placentas are currently being collected from the next generation which are not part of this application. There are over 8500 whole placentas available from the 1991-1992 collection that have been fixed in formalin and stored for future research use.
Analysis of the placentas will be used to investigate 1) placental traits and adverse pregnancy outcomes, 2) placental traits and maternal health, including lifelong health outcomes, 3) placental traits and offspring health, including lifelong health outcomes.
