  • Research summary

Many of us are at risk of liver disease. The most serious form is liver scarring, or ‘cirrhosis’. It is a leading cause of early death in the UK and a growing problem around the world. Drinking too much alcohol, being obese, having diabetes or a hepatitis virus put you at risk of liver disease.

Liver disease can be silent for years before it causes symptoms and gets diagnosed. Finding liver disease earlier might improve a person’s lifespan and improve quality of life.

'Alright My Liver?' is a pilot service offering liver health checks to people at-risk. If diagnosed with a liver problem through the checks, they are offered additional help to attend appointments and regular contact to improve engagement.

    This study aims to:

    • Understand patients' perceptions of the impact of their earlier diagnosis on them and their health-related behaviours
    • Understand what has and hasn’t helped people to attend appointments

To do this, the study will conduct interviews with people using the service to understand their points of view.

The study team has involved members of the public in designing the research protocol.

This study will help to plan future services and improve those already running. It could therefore enable many more people to access care for liver disease earlier and more effectively.
