Research summary
We aim to determine the prevalence of alcohol related liver disease in the population of people who attend hospital following alcohol misuse. Further, we hope to gain insights into why some patients develop liver disease whilst in other people there is no evidence of liver disease despite the same level of alcohol drinking. In order to achieve these secondary aims, we will use blood, urine and stool samples to ascertain the genetic, metabonomic, immunological and gut microbiological factors that determine which patients develop progressive liver fibrosis and which patients do not. We also hope to record the rate of hospital re-attendance following engagement with hospital liver services. These insights will help us discover new ways of reducing the impact of heavy alcohol drinking on liver related hospital re-admission, morbidity and mortality.
