Research summary
The aim of this study is to ascertain whether advanced gait analysis using inertial sensors is able to detect and quantify neurological disability in patients with multiple sclerosis and assess its progression over time.
The assessment of disability in patients with multiple sclerosis is complex. Inadequacies in current disability rating scales such as poor reproducibility and lack of responsiveness are well recognised by the multiple sclerosis research community (Cohen et. al. 2012), and may have hampered previous attempts to test disease modifying treatments for progressive multiple sclerosis (Zaijcek et. al. 2013). Accurately quantifying ambulatory dysfunction in patients with multiple sclerosis may be a more sensitive way of detecting changes in disability progression induced by disease modifying medication within the relatively short time frame of a clinical trial.
Data from this study may help inform further clinical trial designs, and may provide more accurate methods of assessing disability progression in patients with multiple sclerosis in a clinical setting.
