Research summary
Only a few studies have been carried out in different parts of the world and none have been conducted in the UK to evaluate quality of life (QoL) and oral health status of the adult population with treated cleft lip and palate. The holistic treatment provided nowadays to these patients has only been established for a few decades. Therefore, older age groups might not have benefited from all ranges of services and treatments currently available. The purpose of this study is to compare QoL and oral health status of Cleft lip and Palate or Isolated Cleft Palate (CLP) patients between two age populations in the UK; young adults (20-30 olds) and older adults (45-60 olds) and to determine the effect of the different extent of treatment modalities provided for those patients on their QoL and oral health.
Individuals with completed CLP treatment from these two age groups will be recruited from databases held within the cleft lip and palate service for the East of Scotland based at in the Lauriston Building of NHSL. We hope to recruit 40 in each group. This study is funded by the University of Edinburgh MClinDent programme).
CLP subjects will be contacted by post by the research team in Edinburgh Dental Institute and will be sent an invitation letter an information sheet. A stamped-addressed envelope with participation acceptance/rejection form will be included. Should they agree to participate, an invitation to attend a single research appointment in the Restorative Dentistry Department of Edinburgh Dental Institute will be sent. On their arrival, formal consent will be obtained. Following that, self-completion QoL questionnaires will be given followed by an oral health examination which is usually carried out by dentists in check up appointments. This will include; assessment of gum health, missing, decayed and filled teeth and roots. Moreover, mould of teeth, photographs and bite force will be taken. This appointment is estimated to last 60-90 minutes.REC name
