  • Research summary

Family relationships can be important sources of support for people with an intellectual disability (ID), and especially parents often assist their children in various ways. When people with IDs move out, parent-child relationships might change but this is not well understood. People with IDs are rarely asked to take part in research and we know less about their views and experiences. This research explores how young people with IDs experience their parental relationships after they have moved out of their family home.

This study will aim to amplify the views and experiences of people with IDs on an important topic relevant to their support. It will give insight into their relationships at a possibly difficult period in their life, which could help professionals and carers to gain understanding and provide better support.

Participants will be people with an ID who are able to be interviewed. They will be between 18 and 35 years old and will have moved out of the family home in the last year. Participants need at least one living parent, and their moving out cannot have been due to placement breakdown. The study will recruit between 6 and 10 people with the help of local Scottish councils, healthboards, and third-sector organisations.

Once contact is established with the participant, they will meet with the researcher in person to discuss the study. At another in-person meeting, the participant will take part in an interview with the researcher, if they consent. This will take 1.5 hours and a friend or carer (not family) may be present. Participants will also be asked to fill in a short demographics questionnaire. Interviews will then be anonymised, analysed, and the findings will be written up as a doctoral thesis and for publication.

Funding for participant compensation is provided by the University of Edinburgh.
