Research summary
Exfoliative cheilitis is an uncommon condition affecting the lips and is characterised by repeated episodes of peeling, crusting, cracking and discomfort. It is often seen in a younger age group and has a significant physical and psychological impact. Treatment is challenging and there is very little evidence on how best to manage this condition. Often input is needed from different specialists in different hospital departments to help with management.
Our team have treated the largest cohort of exfoliative cheilitis patients across multiple sites. This study aims to analyse the patient demographics, risk factors and potential associations with other medical conditions present in patients with exfoliative cheilitis. Furthermore, it aims to review the outcome of different treatments. Based on this, the study team aim to propose a treatment algorithm for more widespread use by Oral Medicine and Dermatology clinicians in hospitals, which will help to avoid extra procedures and treatments.
