Research summary
Ex-vivo human skin (i.e. skin that has been removed from a donor) is still considered to be the gold standard for skin testing, however it degrades rapidly and therefore cannot be used for irritant testing after 24 hours. This study aims to change the culture of skin, transforming in-vitro skin testing methods (i.e. laboratory testing) for all forms of dermatology research (from cosmetic & consumer goods to academia and pharmaceuticals) to provide safer, longer lasting and more reliable testing and preclinical dermatology analysis.
The study will recruit participants who are undergoing pre-planned, non-emergency (i.e. elective) plastic surgeries involving the removal of skin and will collect samples from the residual tissue. No further involvement or data collection will be required from participants.
