Research summary
The development of advanced echocardiography techniques such as 3D, speckle tracking and contrast myocardial perfusion has redefined the use of echocardiography in cardiology, making it easier to analyse the heart's performance. The application of these advanced techniques in a critical care setting has not been widely studied and as a result, there is a gap in our knowledge as to how the heart performs in acutely unwell patients, and if advanced echocardiography is able to identify previously under-recognised patterns of heart dysfunction within this population. This will be prospective observational study, the intention of which is to define advanced echocardiography parameters in those on medical and/or mechanical circulatory support (including ECMO) in critical care. It is also intended to study the effects of different levels of circulatory support, such as intensive medical or mechanical support versus low-level support on these echo parameters.
