  • Research summary

    ‘The True Trauma of Trauma – An Exploration of the Impact of the Major Trauma Pathway on Adult Patients Observed in the Accident and Emergency Short Stay Unit.’

    This study will aim to gain an insight into the experience of Major Trauma patients seen at one inner city Major Trauma Centre. The study aims to explore the patient's thoughts and feelings on thier journey as a Major Trauma patient and will focus specifically on those patients with minor injuries, needing a short stay in hospital of aproximately 24 hours.
    Previous research has been undertaken to explore the impact of Major Trauma on patients with resulting significant injury but a gap in the knowledge base exists regarding those patients with more minor injuries.

    The study is being undertaken as part of a Masters in Research (Clinical Practice) which will last a year, with a recruitment period of aproximately 2 months. Consenting participants will be required to undertake one single interview lasting up to one hour prior to discharge from the hospital. Consent will be obtained prior to potential participants being informed of thier discharge and interviewed following this.

    Due to the constraints of the study, inclusion/exclusion criteria will be implemented;

    • Meet Major Trauma Tree criteria for Major Trauma Call
    • Non-significant injury (not life threatening or life changing) – as defined by the Trauma Team Leader
    • Admitted to CDU (Accident & Emergency Short Stay Unit) under the care of the Accident and Emergency Team
    • Aged 18-65 years of age (inclusive)
    • Fluent English speaker
    • GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) 15/15
    • No underlying cognitive impairment
    • Not an inmate in prison/detained by police
    • No previous attendance at defined Major Trauma Centre in past year
