  • Research summary

A kidney is an important organ that helps clean the blood and keep the body healthy. In the United Kingdom (UK), more people from Asian and Asian British communities are developing serious kidney disease and needing a kidney transplant. Kidney disease is a condition where the kidneys do not work properly. A transplant is when a person receives a healthy kidney from someone else. Fewer people from these Asian and Asian British communities choose to donate a kidney while they are still alive, and we do not fully understand why.

This study wants to learn about what it’s like for Asian or Asian British adults in the UK to donate a kidney while they are still alive. We want to understand their experiences, including why they chose to donate, what they hoped would happen, and any worries or fears they had. By hearing directly from donors, healthcare professionals can learn how to give better support and information to people from these communities in the future.

To take part, participants must be 18 years old or over, identify as Asian or Asian British, have donated a kidney within the last ten years, be able to speak and understand English, and agree to take part voluntarily. Participants will be recruited through three NHS trust as well as social media platforms. Participants will take part in an interview that lasts approximately one hour. The interview will take place either over the phone or online, depending on what is most convenient for the participant.
