Research summary
Summary of Research
Many adolescents who have type 1 diabetes also experience mental health difficulties such as depression and anxiety. Such mental health problems can have negative impacts on effective management of diabetes which can have adverse long-term physical health outcomes.
There is limited evidence around psychological interventions that are effective for this population. The current study seeks to explore whether the theoretical basis for two therapies (Metacognitive Therapy and Compassion Focussed Therapy)have clinical utility adolescents with type 1 diabetes and anxiety/depression.
The study involves adolescents who have type 1 diabetes taking part online by completing six questionnaires. This only needs to be completed once and should take between 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Participants must be aged between 12-18 years old, and those aged 12-15 will need consent from a caregiver to take part. They will also be required to be sufficiently proficient in English and have access to a computer and the internet.
Individuals will be recruited both through NHS clinics at Alder Hey children’s hospital and also through online recruitment. Those who are recruited through the hospital will be able to consent to the researchers accessing their medical notes to confirm their diagnosis and demographic information.
The study seeks to add to the evidence base to inform effective interventions for adolescents with type 1 diabetes conditions to give the best outcomes for their physical and mental health.Summary of Results
Unfortunately, we were unable to recruit sufficient data in the time frame to be able to analyse any results. Due to time constraints of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology it was no feasible to continue the study at this time. Feedback was given to the Experts by Experience group at Alder Hey Children's Hospital where recruitment took place and vouchers thanking participants for taking part were sent to the few who completed the study.REC name
