Research summary
The principal objective of the study is to explore how older adolescents (aged 14-18), who are accessing child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), make sense of self-compassion. The study aims to investigate how they make sense of self-compassion through exploring experiences of self-compassion within their social worlds. Thus, the study aims to further understand socio-cultural influences of older adolescents’ meaning making of self-compassion, when experiencing mental distress.
In doing so the study aims to inform child and adolescent mental health services, and the wider research community, about adolescents’ experiences of self-compassion within their recovery journeys. The findings will inform clinical interventions and systemic thinking around the development, and teaching, of self-compassion in this age group.
