Research summary
The research will explore educational experiences of adolescent females with anorexia, who are receiving inpatient care. Education plays a huge part in adolescent development, and previous research indicates that education also plays an important role for individuals who have developed eating disorders so severe that they require inpatient care (Maxwell et al, 2011; Koruth, Nevison and Schwannauer, 2012). This research aims to examine the role and importance of engaging in education for adolescents with anorexia in an inpatient setting. It also aims to explore the relationship between education and eating disorders and how education in an inpatient setting impacts academic achievement and eating disorder recovery. \nThe research will utilise a qualitative design. Participants will be recruited from a specialist eating disorder unit, the Rivendell young persons unit at the Priory Hospital in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. Participants will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview, which will be recorded, transcribed and qualitatively analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.
