  • Research summary

The aim of the research is to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of patients admitted to acute mental health wards. 8-12 patients will be recruited from both Victoria house (male acute) and Appletree (female acute) wards (16-24 in total). Semi-structured interviews will be conducted when participants are at the point of discharge, as this would then be a point in the admission where the individual has undergone the whole process - representing a full picture of the person’s admission in the ward from start to finish. During ward rounds in the two hospitals a record is kept of the verbal feedback that is given by the patient during their ward round and it is this patient feedback section that will be obtained. These ward round slides will also be analysed, as they provide a weekly account of the participant’s admission. Analysis of the transcripts (interview) will be carried out using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This will be completed for each participants transcript and ward round slides. It is also aimed to complete the study independently within a female acute and male acute mental health ward and to compare the themes developed in both. Therefore, analysis of male participants and female participants will be carried out independently of one another. When writing up consideration of the similarities or differences between the two groups may be given. This is due to each group being homogenous and being within different hospitals.
