  • Research summary

Hospital care is primarily oriented around single health conditions, yet many people admitted to hospital live with more than one chronic health condition, otherwise known as multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). MLTC, which affect 1 in 4 adults, and 2 in 3 people aged 65 and over, are becoming increasingly common, impacting healthy life expectancy and often giving rise to complex health and social care needs.

Current evidence suggests that people living with MLTC have longer hospital stays, slower recovery periods and poorer experiences of hospital care, but in-depth understandings of the experiences people with MLTC have in hospital are limited. How healthcare experiences might be shaped by life course and biography, for example as people age with MLTC, remains poorly understood.

This research will provide unique insights into how people with MLTC with diverse sociodemographic characteristics experience hospital care. We will conduct an initial interview with all participants, and then conduct two further interviews over the course of a year with half the participants. The study will provide information on how people with MLTC experience care in hospital, but will also provide context from their lives that will help us to understand their experiences. Findings from this research will provide evidence on how hospital care might best be configured to improve care for the increasing numbers of people living with MLTC.
