Research summary
This research study will test a new service that aims to help older patients (aged 65 years or older) who are taking several medicines. This service will be delivered in community pharmacies, by trained pharmacists, over a period of 12 months. As part of the development of the current service, we held focus group discussions with older patients who were taking several medicines (subject to a separate ethical submission and approval). This helped us to better understand the reasons why patients experience difficulties when taking several medicines. It has also allowed us to select the best solutions that might help patients.
The current study will involve testing these solutions as part of a new service. Patients will be asked to attend three appointments in the pharmacy from which they normally collect their medicines. During these appointments patients will be asked about any difficulties they experience when taking several medicines. Together, the patient and pharmacist will choose the best solutions to help overcome any difficulties. This study will allow us to see how these solutions might work in practice and whether this type of service is acceptable and useful for both patients and community pharmacists. As part of this study we also want to find out if study procedures (e.g. patient recruitment) work well or what would be done to improve these.
