  • Research summary

Airway devices are commonly used in anaesthetic practice. A supraglottic airway device (SAD) is inserted into the mouth when the patient is asleep, sitting just above the opening to the lungs, and ensures the patient receives adequate oxygen, whilst removing carbon dioxide and delivering anaesthetic gases to keep them asleep. It is removed before the patient is completely awake. We would like to study the performance of the device.

Almost every month a 'new' type of SAD appears on the market, fully CE marked, and is commonly a small variation of existing devices. However, there is no in situ data related to use during patient care (as this is not a regulatory requirement for CE marking) but is data that is very useful for clinicians as reference data.

One such SAD is called the LMA® Protector. To generate a dataset for this device, we propose to make observations during routine clinical use.
