Research summary
This study is the first part of a larger study that will adapt an existing system (the Advanced Symptom Management System - ASyMS) to make it fit for purpose for use by people who have had surgery for colorectal cancer. ASyMS is a mobile phone-based, remote monitoring system that has been shown to improve patients' symptoms through early detection and prompt interventions however it must be tailored to the specific needs of each clinical specialty. The endpoint will be a version of ASyMS suitable for use in a colorectal surgical setting which is ready for future research.
This first part of the larger study will involve conducting focus groups/interviews with patients who have recently had an operation for colorectal cancer to explore their experiences/perceptions of symptoms as well as healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in this clinical area to gain their perceptions of symptoms, assessment and management as well details around what content and functionality is required to adapt ASyMS for use by patients and clinicians to monitor symptoms and post-op complications during the first 30 days post colorectal cancer surgery. All perspectives and experiences will be pulled together and a paper version of the symptom assessment component of ASyMS will be prepared which will undergo testing in the second part of the study.REC name
