  • Data collection arrangements

The Liverpool Acute Pancreatitis Research Biobank is the largest bank of samples and data relating to patients with acute pancreatitis in the UK. All patients presenting to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of acute pancreatitis are approached by our dedicated clinical research staff and asked to participate. Many graciously donate samples of their blood, urine, faeces and other tissue removed as part of their clinical care at a number of different days whilst in hospital. These are then linked to data relating to their clinical progress, allowing detailed investigation of the disease course as well as any potential effects of new treatments. Samples are processed immediately and stored in our regulated refrigeration facility for tests that we hope will ultimately lead to greatly improved care and treatment options for other patients with acute pancreatitis.

  • Research programme

The Liverpool Acute Pancreatitis Research Biobank employs dedicated researchers and data managers who work towards a common goal of finding an effective treatment for acute pancreatitis. This work links in to collaborations with researchers across the country and across the globe with the aim to maximise the benefit from our unique resource. Because the Biobank holds samples taken very early in acute pancreatitis as well as those taken many weeks later in those with the most severe forms of the disease, it allows researchers to probe deeply into common factors that may contribute towards severe disease developing, propose new treatments and measure their effectiveness at the same time.
