Research summary
AIM: The aim of this study is to qualitatively ascertain from both parents of children with palliative care needs and children with palliative care needs, their experiences of acute hospital admission. From this we aim to derive from parents and children how they feel the admissions process to hospital in acute circumstances within the context of a life limiting condition may be further strengthened, improved and made more ameliorative, personalised and efficient, with due understanding of their specialised and often uniquely presenting needs.
From this we will work co-productively with parents and children to iteratively design a new or improved model of approaching acute admission of children with life limiting conditions, as appropriate and directed by parents and children. This may constitute the formulation of pointers and recommendations for non-specialist staff in acute hospital settings, a training aide, seminar/CPD programme or alternatively, a more prescribed algorithmic approach.
SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: This project will also further strengthen research links and opportunities between the University Health Board and Children’s Hospices in North Wales which play an integral part in the provision of paediatric palliative care services and regional professional training.
