Research summary
We aim to assess the feasibility of evaluating the effectiveness of unobtrusive wearable physical activity monitors called accelerometers in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). This is a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton manifested by back pain and progressive spinal stiffness, resulting in reduced mobility, sleep disturbance and spinal deformity. Assessment of outcome is based on patient report of pain and disease severity measures, plus clinical examination and imaging. These accelerometers are worn on the wrist (like a wristwatch) and objectively measure movement, which eliminates the difficulties and inaccuracies commonly encountered when people are asked to self-report their physical activity levels. Our patients will be asked to wear an accelerometer continuously for 16 days and to complete a short questionnaire regarding their
experience of wearing the accelerometer. Accelerometers and questionnaires will be provided by researchers at RD&E hospital and will be returned to investigators at University of Exeter via the post. The objectives for this project are: 1) to assess the feasibility of collecting this data in this patient group and 2)examine the relationship between physical activity variables and standard disease outcome measuresREC name
