Research summary
Activity in Surgical Patients.
This study is designed to measure the amount of activity that patients do normally before and after surgery. We are keen to do this in order to see if there is a way to improve the amount of physical exercise that our patients do before and after operations to improve outcomes and reduce complications of surgery.
We are collecting baseline data which will show what patients do at the moment using a wristwatch device which measures movement using an accelerometer, and also with a simple questionnaire. We plan to do this in a few different groups of patients as we believe that patients with different diseases will have differing 'normal' activity habits.
Once we have collected this data we will use it to help us to design a exercise plan that can be used to improve activity and health before surgery for patients coming through our hospital. We hope that this will improve outcomes from surgery in the future. Previous work, by other researchers, suggests that this is possible and beneficial: we would like to apply this to our local surgical population.REC name
