Research summary
Some patients who come to the emergency department with chest pain and have not had a heart attack, are at a raised risk of having a heart attack in the future. We know this by taking a blood test (troponin) which looks at damage to their heart. These patients are often sent home from hospital with no information about their risk of heart disease. A survey in the emergency department revealed that patients in the emergency department would like to know more information about heart disease. The aim of this study is to help patients who come to the emergency department with chest pain understand their risk of future heart disease and work with them to identify how they could make healthy changes to their lives and reduce their risk. We don’t know the best way to do this so we will use a co-design approach to work with patients and doctors to understand how they think this should be done. We will develop an approach to provide information to patients about their risk and how to reduce this risk. This will help these patients better understand their risk and how to make changes to their lifestyle to reduce their risk. This will stop more people from developing cardiovascular disease.
We will ask patients and healthcare professionals to come to separate focus group or an individual interview to provide their opinion of a new approach and how we tell people about their risk. The research team will then develop some prototype brief interventions. The participants will be invited to attend a second mixed focus group or an individual interview to provide feedback on the prototypes.
