Research summary
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited disease in the United Kingdom, mainly affecting the lungs. Flare ups of CF are common; leading to hospital admission and poorer lung capacity. Physical activity has the potential to reduce the impact and progression of CF, prevent flare-ups, and reduce healthcare expenditure. Despite the benefits of regular physical activity, adherence to physical activity recommendations is poor.
The aim of this project is to determine whether use of an online program (ActivOnline) to track physical activity participation and provide feedback, is more effective than usual care in improving physical activity participation, quality of life, lung functoin and behaviours related to exercise and activity.
A total of up to 110 young people with CF who have had a respiratory related admission to hospital will be invited to take part. People who agree will be randomly allocated to use the online program, or to usual care (i.e. no use of website). All participants will be provided with information about recommended physical activity guidelines for their age group. People allocated to ActivOnline will be provided with a pedometer, and access to the ActivOnline program. Participants within this active intervention arm will be asked to record their daily physical activity and exercise using the website and will have the opportunity to communicate with clinicians via the inbuilt messaging system for any queries or support related to their physical activity participation.
At the beginning and end of the 3-month intervention, and at 3 months after completion of the intervention period, all participants will undergo measurements of physical activity participation, lung function and a series of questionnaires related to behaviours and attitudes.
