  • Research summary

Cystic Fibrosis affects 10,000 people in the United Kingdom (UK). People with Cystic Fibrosis (PWCF) typically die from lung damage at a median age of 28 years. Randomised controlled trials show that preventative medications reduce exacerbations and/or preserve lung function. However adherence is poor. We have been funded to undertake a five year programme to develop and evaluate a new approach to helping PWCF adhere to their nebulisers. We will undertake a number of studies as part of this full programme and will seek ethical review for each study separately. This is the first study of the ACTIF programme and it will inform the next stages of the programme. In this study we will undertake a qualitative interview study with 20-24 adults attending the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Centre to explore their views about their condition, treatments and views about their nebuliser treatment in particular. This will be used, along with psychological theory, to develop an intervention to be evaluated in later stages of the programme.
