Research summary
In NHS Grampian, there are approximately 22 000 people with Type 2 diabetes and about 45% do not achieve optimal control of their blood glucose. Clinical and subclinical anxiety and depression are common, and are associated with higher blood glucose indicating that these conditions impact markedly on efforts to self-manage the condition. Research indicates that treating anxiety and depression alone does not lead to better diabetes control. The ACT Now project aims to improve the emotional wellbeing and the ability of adults with Type 2 diabetes to self-manage their condition. This would be achieved by developing a supported self-help web-based intervention founded on the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). This innovative and person-centred project will be dellivered across both primary and secondary care. It is anticipated that participants will receive the intervention for between 5 weeks (to improve self-management behaviours focusing on activity levels and dietary habits) to 8 weeks (if significant levels of anxiety and/or depression are present, also). Appointments will be weekly and about 60 minutes long, in-keeping with typical psychological interventions.
