Research summary
Background: Studies have revealed that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can improve quality of life, stress and mental health outcomes for parents of children with autism. However, there have been no studies investigating the effects of ACT on family carers of adults with Intellectual Disabilities.
Aims: This research study will evaluate the effects of a one-day ACT group on family carers of adults with intellectual disabilities on their mental health, quality of life, and positive aspects of carer giving. This research project will also evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of the ACT group intervention.
Methods: Sixteen family carers will be recruited from learning disability services based in Essex and invited to attend a one-day workshop lasting 6 hours. Six self-reported outcome measures and frequencies of values-based behaviours and problematic behaviours will be collected over three time points. Statistical tests will be used to assess if there are any significant differences on outcome measures and behavioural frequencies across time. The magnitude of the differences on outcomes across the time points will also be assessed. Feasibility will be assessed by calculating the percentage of eligible participants who enrolled, completed the intervention, dropped-out, and completed all the outcome measures. Acceptability will be assessed using a questionnaire.
Dissemination: The findings will be shared with the participants and the learning disability service, and published in a peer-reviewed journal.REC name
