Research summary
The study is about advance care planning. Advance care planning is a voluntary process of discussion about future care and may include concerns and wishes, important values or personal goals for care, and their preferences and wishes for types of care or treatment in future. These discussions are often between a patient and their healthcare professionals, including family and friends if wished. It is advised that these discussion are documented, reviewed, and that key people are made aware of it.
In this study, we will talk to six to eight patients who have had advance care planning discussions, up to two people who are close to each of them and up to two healthcare professionals involved in their care to find out their views about advance care planning. Those close to patients, and healthcare professionals, will be interviewed after the patient has died. The interviews will last for about an hour, will be audio-recorded, typed up and analysed. Any personal information will be removed that can identify people, such as their names.
We will use the findings to try to improve the way that advance care planning discussions are conducted and used.
