Research summary
The prevalence of sleep disturbances including insomnia is high in chronic pain patients and is known to contribute to the maintenance of chronic pain. There are at least 30 different sleep evaluation scales and questionnaires. Previous work has used several different tools to establish, quantify the prevalence and severity of sleep disturbance in chronic pain patients. However, these are cumbersome and time consuming. Simpler scoring systems do exist; The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), completed by all patients attending the pain clinic has a single question numerically assessing sleep disturbance that is simple and quick to complete.
This study aims to assess whether correlation exists between simple sleep assessment using the BPI and formal sleep assessment tools which would facilitate rapid clinical detection and targeted treatment of insomnia in this patient group.
