Research summary
It is well established that (type 2) diabetes leads to adverse health outcomes, for example heart attacks, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. It is also known that patients with diabetes can improve their own health, and reduce the chance of these adverse outcomes by undertaking self-management measures alongside the usual medicines and medical follow-up visits.
Mapmydiabetes is a comprehensive, diabetes-specific, web-based system designed to enable patients with diabetes to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence, allowing them to take increasing control of their own condition.
This research project is designed to assess the feasibility of delivering Mapmydiabetes to patients with (type 2) diabetes in a Primary Care setting alongside their usual care across different geographical and socioeconomic setting and to investigate the way in which these patients use Mapmydiabetes.
This study will assess the influences of key demographic drivers on the uptake of self-management practice by evaluating the feasibility of, and challenges associated with, deployment of Mapmydiabetes into Primary Care.
Apart from the use of the web-based system all care will be as per usual standard-of-care. There will be no additional measurements or samples taken. The study will not measure any changes in patient’s physical health as a result of using the system.
