  • Research summary

This study is being undertaken because clinical experience indicates that babies and children from South Asian families in Sheffield often present late to Sheffield Children's Hospital for specialist paediatric allergy care. As well as creating a delay in receiving appropriate treatment and support, this also places some children at additional and unnecessary risk of long term allergies and atopic conditions which continue into adulthood. The reasons behind this pattern of late presentation – which indicates a clear health inequality -are unclear. This small qualitative study will explore the perspectives of South Asian mothers’ about accessing paediatric allergy services and how access to these services in Sheffield can be improved. Participants will be invited to take part in a single semi-structured interview which will examine these issues. The research team have a high level of experience in working with families from South Asian backgrounds and multi-lingual skills will ensure that participants fully understand what the research involves before taking part. Interviews will be undertaken at participant’s home, a community setting or at Sheffield Children's Hospital. They will be conducted in English or the participants preferred spoken language, and will address the overall research aims/questions. The interviews will be analysed using a recognised framework for making sense of qualitative research data. Service user involvement has been built into the study design and at the end of the study service users will be invited to feedback on the findings through community dissemination events. The potential practical value of the study is to inform service delivery for babies and children from South Asian families in order to improve their timely access to paediatric allergy services. This will address wider health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing of babies and children in this population group.
