Research summary
A mixture of our genes, the things we do and what we have learned have been suggested to cause Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition where the brain struggles to properly send and receive signals to different parts of the body. People living with FND report high levels of disability, distress and unemployment. Psychology support for FND could be improved as attempts to get rid of symptoms with psychological therapy has not worked. New thinking around what causes FND suggests living with FND should be the focus of support. This project looks at whether a new group intervention focusing on living well with FND is helpful or not, what parts of the intervention seemed important and useful to patients, and how patients changed during the course of the intervention.
The project will explore these areas through research interviews and will recruit people who have competed the intervention. The project will also involve reviewing how the interviewed persons responded on outcome measures they complete before and after the intervention.
People who have completed the intervention will be invited to research interviews by written letter and telephone. They will be told about what the project is trying to do and they will also be told that they can withdraw from the study at any time.
The interviews will involve meeting with a trainee clinical psychologist and answering questions. If people would like to take part then they can be interviewed online or in-person. If they meet with the trainee in-person, they may have to pay for their travel, but the trainee will give them the money back.
