  • Research summary

This study aims to evaluate the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a group-based trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) programme tailored for individuals experiencing both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain. These two conditions often occur together, with evidence showing that trauma can increase the risk of developing chronic pain, and that both conditions may perpetuate each other. Current treatments typically address PTSD and chronic pain separately, and there is minimal integrated care for individuals living with both conditions.

The research seeks to determine whether a trauma-informed CBT intervention is acceptable to participants experiencing both PTSD symptoms and chronic pain. It aims to investigate the interventions affect on PTSD symptoms, pain intensity, and pain related functioning. The study will also explore mechanisms of change, such as central sensitisation (increased sensitivity of the nervous system) and experiential avoidance (attempts to escape or avoid negative thoughts and emotions).

The study will use a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Participants will complete validated self-report questionnaires before, during, and after the 8 week intervention to assess changes in symptoms. Additionally, those who consent will have the opportunity to take part in a semi-structured interview via telephone or Microsoft Teams to share their experiences of the intervention, including its acceptability and impact.

Participants will be recruited from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust service, including the Isle of Wight NHS Chronic Pain Service. Eligible participants must be over 18, fluent in English, and currently experiencing PTSD symptoms and chronic pain.
